The South Whidbey girls tennis team recorded its first Cascade Conference victory over rival school Coupeville on Monday, March 24.

The Falcons zipped past the Wolves to a 5-0 win without any of the South Whidbey players losing a set. Senior Amelia Weeks cruised at first singles defeating Allie Hanigan 6-0, 6-1. Isla Dubendorf, a junior, defeated Coupeville’s Jacki Ginning 6-2, 6-0.

In the doubles matches, the new tandem of Tess Radisch and Brea Gauger fought off Coupeville’s Samantha Martin and Sydney Aparitio 6-1, 7-5. South Whidbey’s second doubles team of Katrina Layton and Colleen Groce beat McKenzie Bailey and Wynter Thorn 6-2, 6-0. At third doubles, Falcons Kendra Warwick and Bayley Gochanour defeated Ana Luvera and Sydney Antio 6-2, 6-2.

Beating Coupeville soundly was a nice turnaround for South Whidbey, which suffered like its rival school in a match against Bellingham on March 22. The Red Raiders, a top 2A program, rode down the Falcons in a 7-0 victory.

Bellingham won the meet without dropping a single set to South Whidbey. Kira Vizorka won the first singles bout over Weeks 6-2, 6-3. Kara Burns beat Radisch 6-4, 6-1 in the number two spot. Mariah Miller dropped Dubendorf 6-2, 6-2 at third singles. Oriana LoCicero beat Sophie Nilsen 6-1, 6-1 in the fourth singles match.

The doubles teams fared about as well as the singles players. Ellie Iversen and Catie Welch beat Layton and Groce 6-1, 6-1; Tess Owen and Keri Brauner beat Gauger and Warwick 6-1, 6-0; and Olivia Bjorklund and Ashley Spink beat Lindsay Oppelt and Bayley Gochanour 6-2, 6-0.

Monday’s match marked the third contest in four days for South Whidbey. The first in the string was March 21 at South Whidbey High School against 3A Oak Harbor, with the Wildcats winning 5-2.

South Whidbey’s two wins were from Weeks and Radisch playing first doubles and defeating Caterinea Amsler and Chelse Admire 6-1, 6-3, and Gauger and Warwick beating Oak Harbor’s Ria Bains and Jastine Sanchez 7-5, 2-6, 6-1.
