South Whidbey will send three of its boys tennis players to the 1A tri-district tournament later this month.

Falcon senior Jack Hood and junior Jonathon Peterson advanced as the second-seed doubles team from District 1. Charley Stelling, a junior, advanced as the top singles player in District 1.

Stelling only lost two games in the entire tournament. He defeated two Coupeville players, Dalton Martin and Sebastian Davis, each 6-0, 6-1.

Hood and Peterson combined to rally after losing the first set to Coupeville’s Brian Borris and Kyle Bodamer, 4-6. They settled into the match and won the next two sets, 6-2, 6-0.

In the next match, they fell to Coupeville’s Aaron Curtin and Ben Etzell, 1-6, 3-6.

South Whidbey faced a hard match in the loser-out third match, when former teammates squared off for the final tri-district doubles spot. Hood and Peterson took on teammates Campbell Albertsen and Nathan Riley and again had to rally from a first-set loss, which Albertsen and Riley won 6-2. The Falcons’ top doubles team, however, recovered and won the match 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Albertsen and Riley played each of their three matches to three sets, including a close win in the first round. Facing Friday Harbor’s Tiger Xu and Sean Hills, the Falcons won 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. South Whidbey’s second doubles squad scratched out a second-set win in the next match against Etzell and Curtin, eventually losing 0-6, 7-6 (7-3), 1-6.

South Whidbey’s other district competitor, junior Andy Zisette, split his matches. He defeated Meridian’s Chris Pyles, 6-0, 6-1, but lost to Coupeville’s Davis 2-6, 4-6.
