Daryl Vincent Franzen

Daryl Vincent Franzen, 81, died Nov. 6, 2002, at Careage of Whidbey, Coupeville.

He was born May 24, 1921, in Coupeville to Charles Orange and Phoebe Elizabeth (Barrett) Franzen. He was raised in Coupeville and attended Coupeville High School.

Daryl enlisted in the Army in 1938 at the age of 17. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a staff sergeant. He began his military career as a cook and later became a searchlight technician. He was discharged Oct. 31, 1945. He married the former Inez V. “Chic” Clark July 11, 1942, in Yuma, Ariz.

Mr. Franzen returned to Coupeville following the war and began his apprenticeship as an electrician with Jim Cross and then with McGreevy Electric. He eventually moved on to work with Clarence Pease at Whidbey Electric.

In 1962, Daryl Vincent Franzen and cousin Larry Barrett started Central Electric in Coupeville. That partnership continued until Larry retired in 1972. In 1983, Daryl retired and turned the business over to his son, Derek Franzen.

Daryl loved carpentry and was a jack of all trades. He became the fix-it person for Coupeville, accepting projects up to the time of his death. He was a member of Coupeville United Methodist Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Whitehead-Muzzall Post 7392.

He is survived by his wife, “Chic” Franzen, Coupeville; three children and their spouses, Sharon Franzen of Coupeville, Alana and Mike Pizzuto of Mount Vernon, and Derek and Leslie Franzen of Coupeville; a brother, Robert Franzen, of Chelan; two sisters, Vivian Fisher and Betty Jenne of Coupeville; grandchildren Jason Raines of Hollywood, Calif., Ryan Samplawski of Snohomish, Jorie Samplawski of Oak Harbor, Lexis Chappell of Fernley, Nev., Kyle Raines of Mount Vernon and Kelsi and Garrett Franzen of Coupeville; and a great-granddaughter, Brooke Allen, Oak Harbor. He was preceded in death by a sister, Neva Banjamin, of Milton.

Graveside funeral services will be Nov. 11 at Sunnyside Cemetery at 2 p.m., Coupeville with Pastors Mary Boyd and David Engle officiating.
