To the editor:

I have just returned from an incredibly satisfying and enjoyable afternoon of sailing on Holmes Harbor with two young middle schoolers from South Whidbey.

As one of the volunteer skippers of a12-foot San Francisco Bay Pelican from the South Whidbey Yacht Club, I was privileged to be able to take part in a program to introduce young people from our communities to the joys of sailing through an agreement with the South Whidbey Youth Connections HUB.

The thrill and excitement of teaching about boats and being on the water on a sunny afternoon, a first for many of these kids, brings a great deal of satisfaction to those of us who have been fortunate enough to have done it for many years. To see the smiles and dancing eyes as they discover our world is truly amazing.

How much more convenient it would be, and how many more could be served if we were to have a facility that could be used for more events such as this? Possibly even sightseeing excursions for the elderly, as well as the opportunity for the young folks to learn and be a part of the saltwater environment of the Northwest.

It is possible; a yes vote for the marina levy in November will go a long way toward this realization.

You see, a decent marina is not just for wealthy yachtsmen, but for all islanders to enjoy. Fishermen, kayakers, sailors, divers, water-skiers, and yes, even casual visitors to the renewed Phil Simon Park, as well as those who merely enjoy strolling the docks to look at the boats, will all benefit from an improved marina. Not to mention the sea life that will appreciate the removal of tires and creosote from their environment.

So consider these young people and others when you mark your ballot, and please vote yes for the marina.
