Mr. Ed Hickey’s letter in the March 30 edition of The Record, “Trump isn’t perfect, but he deserves a fair chance,”  took my breath away. It was as if the gentleman had just returned from Mars. At least that would explain why he seems not to know that Mr. Trump has announced that his top advisor on foreign affairs would be… Mr. Trump.

“I talk to myself,” Mr. Trump told a reporter in explanation.

Now that’s reassuring.

I find it impossible to believe that anyone can watch Mr. Trump and not recoil from his relentless displays of narcissism and his psychopathic behaviors. Has Mr. Hickey not noticed the tiresome references to “my poll numbers,” “I’m ahead in the polls,” “People love me,” and all the rest that so clearly indicate an emotional void within the man that nothing will ever fill? Has Mr. Hickey not listened as Mr. Trump speaks of punching out protesters and paying the court fees of anyone who is willing to do so?

Had Mr. Hickey returned from Mars on the day I write this letter — March 30 — he might have an excuse for not knowing that Mr. Trump has lied more than 50 percent of the time when he has opened his mouth. He might also have an excuse for not knowing that his hero has been endorsed by a former leader of the Ku Klux Klan.

He would also be able to declare himself without that knowledge that a good number of Mr. Trump’s followers wear tattoos featuring the number 88 (That’s the eighth letter of the alphabet twice, Mr. Hickey. That’s double H. That’s Heil Hitler.) and swastikas. There’s a reason that the “elite” Republicans are doing everything they can to keep him from the Republican nomination. They’re probably imagining what it would be like to have such a man within launching distance of a nuclear weapon.

Mr. Hickey declares that Mr. Trump should be “given a chance” as Obama was. Please. Mr. Obama was a U.S. senator, a Constitutional lawyer, a graduate of Harvard law school, and the editor of the Harvard Law Review. Mr. Trump is a man who sells his name to put on buildings. If that is what Mr. Hickey truly wants in a president, I heartily encourage him to cast his vote. I wouldn’t brag about it, however.
