Besides flogging those of us with poor memories by repeating itself, history can be a real comfort.

It places us in a larger context, connecting us with the generations who came before and linking us to those who follow.

Thanks to everyone who told me they enjoyed the series about four Langley buildings that contribute to our history. I know others of you want to share stories of your homes or businesses, and we would be delighted to hear them.

The stories housed in these buildings are important. So is the effort to preserve them. Many of us conflate the words historic preservation with “architecturally significant.” We shouldn’t. History often takes place in humble structures.

I challenge owners of Langley buildings constructed before 1940 to consider nominating your property for the Langley Historic Register. There are some restrictions attached, but there are also tax credits. Langley Historic Preservation commissioners will work with you to see that your concerns are addressed. While I realize self-preservation is fundamental, I still hope we can begin to think a little more long-term — a little more historically.
