The man arrested for making a bomb threat Thursday aboard the ferry M/V Cathlamet allegedly admitted to police he wanted to blow up the ferry on the Clinton-Mukilteo route.

Michael William Harsh was heard by a ferry employee on the M/V Cathlamet talking about “a bomb right here and the whole place will blow up and a lot of people are gonna die.”

Another witness said Harsh was acting suspicious, and also overheard Harsh on his cell phone saying, “I don’t know, I guess they are looking for a bomb or something.”

According to a Washington State Patrol report on the incident, Harsh later told detectives from the State Patrol that he had made comments about sinking the ferry, bombs and the chemical Thermite being used to sink the ferry.

He also said he was bipolar and had not taken his prescription medication in recent weeks.

Harsh, 32, is a former Langley resident who has been living in Everett. His arraignment on a felony count of making a bomb threat is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday in Snohomish County Superior Court.

Harsh was met by Mukilteo Police when the Cathlamet docked in Mukilteo just before 9 a.m. Thursday. An officer told him to put his backpack on the ground, and the Cathlamet and the Mukilteo Ferry Terminal were both evacuated until police could determine if the backpack contained a bomb.

The Snohomish County Bomb Squad investigated the backpack and found it did not contain explosives.

Sailings on the Clinton-Mukilteo route were suspended for roughly two hours yesterday during the investigation.
