The 11th Annual Whidbey Interfaith Vigil of Peace and Hope will be held on South Whidbey this weekend.

The event is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, 5217 Honeymoon Bay Road in Freeland.

The vigil will reflect on the 50th anniversary of President Lyndon Johnson’s announcement of “War on Poverty.”

According to an event flyer, over half of the country’s discretionary spending is dedicated to the military while programs “to help vulnerable citizens go wanting.” This disparity and the impact to Whidbey residents will be highlighted with interactive readings.

The vigil’s featured speaker is Whidbey resident Faith Wilder, a South Whidbey Homeless Coalition organizer and board member.

Music will be led by Trinity Lutheran Music Minister Karl Olsen, and the event will include Buddhist sutras, First Nations spiritual traditions along with Christian, Jewish and Muslim sacred scripture readings.
