Weather prompts fireworks worry for Whidbey Island

Responding to community concern, Island County Commissioner Helen Price Johnson said this week she recently sought to limit the discharge of fireworks to just the Fourth of July.

Her efforts were thwarted, however, by state laws that require more time to make such changes.

Price Johnson said constituents and a South Whidbey fire official have voiced concern about the warm weather and low moisture levels.

“I’m not a lone wolf here,” she said.

With a emergency fireworks restriction off the table, the commissioner instead planned to seek board support Tuesday for a proclamation requesting the public to exercise extra care when discharging fireworks.

The board’s decision could not be reported by press time Tuesday.
