Whidbey Island police get federal funding

Whidbey Island law enforcement agencies will receive more than $73,000 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Island County commissioners approved the pass-through funding, to be used for equipment and salaries for Operation Stonegarden, at Tuesday’s regular meeting.

The Langley Police Department received $11,940; Washington State Parks got $5,917 for marine safety; the Island County Department of Emergency Management received $5,450; the Coupeville Marshal’s Office $12,120; and the Oak Harbor Police Department got $37,720.

The purpose of Operation Stonegarden is to “increase border security in direct coordination with state and local law enforcement,” according to county documents.
