What’s happening this month at South Whidbey’s Family Resource Center

We, at Readiness to Learn, hope that you and your families are enjoying a restful, fun, busy, relaxed, all-of-the-above summer, at home or on vacation! We once again congratulate all graduating seniors and trust that college plans, work plans and career-setting goals are all part of the next step to independence.

The Family Resource Center is a great place for resource and referral services. We are open all summer from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Feel free to drop in any time during those hours.

Back To School Project! 2012

Did you know it costs approximately $114 per child for a new backpack plus all school supplies for one child to attend school?

We at the Readiness to Learn Foundation are busily getting ready for the 14th annual Back to School Project.

With that, comes the coordination of many community volunteers, the support of service clubs and church communities, local businesses and donations large and small. What a great community endeavor this is, as we come together to make sure every child has the tools they need to begin school successfully. We have lots of fun volunteer opportunities at the Back-To-School Project. Call us at 221-0484.

If you are a family who finds back to school buying a stretch, call the Readiness To Learn Foundation at

221-6808 ext. 4322 or 221-0484. One of our family support advocates will be happy to discuss eligibility requirements with you.

RAPP — Relatives As Parents Program

Are you raising a relative’s child? Is the child your grandchild, niece or nephew? Would you like to join an informal group of relative caregivers who understand what you are going through? You are invited to attend a RAPP meeting once a month. We also welcome drop-ins. Bring a guest.

For more information or to sign up, call Marilynn Norby at 221-0484.

Single Mom’s Group

Feeling isolated? Just want a night out? Would you enjoy someone to talk to confidentially, who, like yourself, is parenting alone or feels like you are? Want to know how to or which community resources you can access? Our group is open to any mom who is parenting alone, or feels alone, and needs the support of other single moms. Join this great group in a casual and confidential atmosphere.

We meet once a month from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Join us for a complimentary dinner, potluck style and free childcare, upon advanced request. Bring yourself, your ideas, your joys and your challenges to this supportive environment.

For more information and to RSVP for child care, call 221-0484.

Parents of kids with Special Needs Group

All parents and caregivers of children with special needs of any age are welcome to join this monthly support group. Lend support or get support, and relax with other parents who share the joys and challenges of raising a child with special needs. Meetings take place in the Family Resource Center the second Friday of each month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Childcare is provided upon advanced request.

Call the Family Resource Center at 221-0484 to RSVP and for more information.

Volunteer Opportunities

Are you looking for a fun, exciting way to interact with people, use your ideas and skills for the greater good, and dedicate a bit of your time and attention to nurturing our wonderful South Whidbey Community? Volunteering at Readiness To Learn Foundation’s Family Resource Center can help you meet those goals. We can always use an extra pair of hands, so if you are interested in volunteering, let us know.

We are a fun group, we always have food and hot coffee, and you get to pick what you like to do best. Opportunities include general office tasks (filing, helping with mailings, phone calls, laminating, light cleaning and organizing, etc.), simple outdoor projects including light gardening and a bit of external painting that needs to be done on our porch and doors.

We also need assistance with our seasonal community-based Back To School Project.

We are located on the elementary school campus. If interested, call 221-0484. We would love to work alongside you on behalf of our South Whidbey children and families.

Volunteer of the Month

We are happy to announce Annie Rundberg as our August Volunteer of the Month.

Annie has donated so much of her time at our various projects over the past year! She possesses excellent communication and office skills, gives tirelessly while raising her two daughters, and is always cheerful.

Recently Annie was our BBQ expert at our last Relatives As Parents Program (RAPP) group meeting in Castle Park. Not only did she start the fire but she grilled all the food!

Thank you Annie, for being part of our team! We appreciate you and all that you do.
