South Whidbey had no answer for Sultan’s potent offense or sophomore forward Alexis Griggs on Saturday, as the Turks won 8-0.

Griggs scored five goals — three in the first half — to power the Turks (5-7-0 Cascade Conference, 6-8-0 overall) to the 1A Cascade Conference girls soccer win and secure a spot in the District 1 tournament. Sultan finished as the second-best 1A team in the league, ahead of Cedar Park Christian and South Whidbey, which remains winless with only two games remaining.

On Saturday, South Whidbey looked out of sorts and outmatched against Sultan on the Turks’ field. Falcon players were out of position, leading some of the team leaders to loudly chide them.

The Turks used a tandem of tall forwards to move past the Falcon defenders. Griggs and junior forward Victoria Seidl each scored multiple times. Seidl finished with a pair of goals and an assist. Sultan’s other goal came in the 75th minute by junior forward Sarah Swift on a pass from senior midfielder Jazmen Griggs.

Alexis Griggs scored her fifth and final goal unassisted in the 77th minute.

South Whidbey did not record a shot on goal in the first half.

The Falcons finally got a look late in the second half, but junior Sanna Bjork’s shot missed. The next look was a corner kick that sailed out of bounds.

On Monday, South Whidbey was again shut out — this time by Cedarcrest, 3-0.

It has been a rough season for South Whidbey, which has allowed 61 goals and scored only 6. Injuries hampered the Falcons earlier, but the team never found its footing.
